Pastor Jeff Knott of Grace Church in Port Hope, Ontario continues the sermon series “parables: secrets of the kingdom of heaven” with “The Power of Forgiveness:
God’s ability and His desire is to forgive.
We are most like God when we choose to forgive someone.
Lewis Smede said, “Forgiving is love’s toughest work.”
It’s love’s biggest risk.
How many times should we forgive? When it comes to forgiveness, if you’re still counting, you’ve missed the point of Jesus’ teaching. There is no limit on forgiveness.
This is the way God’s love and rule works in the world because we are subjects of the King and the Kingdom we too are expected to act in similar ways.
The forgiveness we have already received there’s this expectation that we would forgive someone else.
If you add up the value in terms of God’s holiness and His righteousness and the perfection of God and how far we’ve missed the mark, we literally owe zillions of dollars. But God through Christ has forgiven us. How much can we forgive another?
Our bank account is loaded with grace. Why can’t we afford a little grace for someone else?
The Kingdom comes in a broken world and the Kingdom offers unlimited grace. But with that unlimited grace there comes an unlimited demand on us that we must be like the Father, we must be like the King, we must be like God and Jesus and offer that same forgiveness.
God’s forgiveness brings us freedom, but that freedom is retracted when we do not practice forgiveness.
When you operate in grace you get more grace, but when you operate in a lack of grace you end up with a lack of grace.
Forgive someone for your sake so you can be free.
